The country of Togo became known as such in 1960. From 1960-2005 Togo was ruled by Gnassingbe Eyadema until his death. His son was installed as president shortly after. Togo held its first elections that were considered to be mostly free in the year 2007. Economically, Togo’s main source of income comes from the export of cocoa, coffee, and cotton.
